Symptoms
After installing drivers on an HP EliteBook, a Synaptics fingerprint sensor may appear in Device Manager with a yellow warning icon. Windows Hello Fingerprint may also be unavailable.
An affected device may be listed as Synaptics FS7605 Touch Fingerprint Sensor with PurePrint(TM).
Known Workaround
On affected devices we have tested, clearing the fingerprint data stored through the BIOS has allowed the sensor to initialise correctly. A warning icon does not necessarily mean that the fingerprint driver failed to install.
- Restart the device and enter the BIOS setup. On many HP devices, press F10 repeatedly while the device starts.
- Open the Security or Biometric Security settings. The location varies by model.
- Look for an option such as Clear Fingerprints, Reset Fingerprint Data, or similar.
- Clear the stored fingerprint data.
- Save the changes and restart Windows.
- Check the fingerprint sensor again in Device Manager.
A driver reinstallation should not normally be required after clearing the fingerprint data.
Why This May Help
Some biometric information can remain associated with the fingerprint hardware or system firmware after Windows is reinstalled. On certain devices, clearing this data has resolved a fingerprint sensor warning after the driver was installed.
This is a known workaround rather than a confirmed cause for every fingerprint sensor warning. Other driver, firmware, or hardware problems can produce a similar warning.
If the Warning Remains
Open the fingerprint sensor's Properties in Device Manager and check the message under Device status. Contact SMART Support and provide:
- The HP device model
- The fingerprint sensor name
- The Device Status message and error code, such as Code 10 or Code 43
- A screenshot of the warning and Device Status message
Further driver, firmware, or hardware investigation may be required.
