SMART checks every device for missing drivers before key injection. The check runs on all subscription plans.
Short answer: On Pay As You Go, SMART checks for missing drivers but the technician installs them manually. On Essentials and Pro, SMART provides a driver downloader stage; installation runs automatically only when Enable Automated Driver Install is enabled.
What “Enable Driver Check” Means
The Enable Driver Check setting controls whether the technician is allowed to continue when drivers are missing. It does not turn the driver scan itself on or off.
- Enabled: all required drivers must be installed before the technician can proceed to key injection.
- Disabled: SMART still checks for missing drivers, but the technician can skip the driver stage and continue to key injection.
This setting is configured for each facility in the SMART client settings.
Pay As You Go
On Pay As You Go, SMART checks for missing drivers and shows the result. The technician installs any required drivers manually. If Enable Driver Check is enabled, injection remains blocked until the missing drivers have been installed. If it is disabled, the technician can continue without installing them.
Essentials and Pro
On Essentials and Pro, SMART includes a driver downloader screen between Checking Drivers and Key Injection. Missing drivers can be downloaded and installed through this stage.
Automation Settings
Automation Settings determine whether the driver and injection workflow progresses automatically or waits for technician input:
- Enable Automated Driver Install: automatically installs missing drivers before key injection.
- Skip Driver Install: skips the driver installation stage.
- When automation is not enabled, the technician must review the screen and manually continue to the next stage.
Installing Drivers Manually
When manual installation is required, download the missing drivers from the device manufacturer and install them following the manufacturer’s instructions. Re-run or continue SMART once the required drivers are installed.
Firmware Updates and Laptop Power
Some firmware update packages have additional power requirements and will not install unless the laptop is connected to AC power and its battery is sufficiently charged.
Before processing a laptop through SMART:
- Connect the correct AC adapter and confirm that Windows reports the device as plugged in.
- Charge the battery to at least 50%.
- Keep the AC adapter connected throughout driver and firmware installation.
If a firmware update does not install, check the battery level and AC connection before treating it as a driver failure. Once the device is plugged in and charged to at least 50%, run the driver stage again.
Power requirements are enforced by the device or firmware manufacturer and can vary between models. They are intended to prevent the device losing power during a firmware update.
