When attempting to inject a Windows licence using SMART, you receive the following error:
OS Version not available
The licensing process will stop and no licence will be injected.
Cause
SMART validates the installed Windows version before allowing a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) licence to be injected.
This validation is based on Microsoft’s current MAR programme compliance requirements.
If the installed version of Windows does not meet the required version for MAR licensing, SMART will display the “OS Version not available” error and prevent the licence injection.
Current Requirement
As of April 2026, Microsoft requires devices to be running:
Windows 11 25H2
for MAR licence injection.
Versions older than 25H2, including Windows 11 24H2, are no longer accepted for MAR licence injection through SMART.
Note: This requirement is separate from Microsoft’s general Windows support lifecycle. A Windows version may still be supported by Microsoft but not accepted for MAR licence injection.
Resolution
Update the device to Windows 11 25H2 and then run SMART again.
Once the device has been updated to a compliant Windows version, SMART will allow the licence injection to proceed.
Why did this work before?
We understand some customers may have successfully injected licences on Windows 11 24H2 previously.
SMART did not immediately enforce this requirement while we sought clarification from Microsoft regarding the MAR programme requirements.
Once Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 25H2 was required for MAR compliance, SMART’s validation rules were updated accordingly.
Need Further Help?
If your device is already running Windows 11 25H2 and you are still receiving this error, please contact SMART Support and provide:
- A screenshot of the error
- The Windows build number (
winver) - The SMART client version being used
Our team will be happy to investigate.
