If a device has already been delivered to your customer without a Windows license being injected through SMART, don’t worry. In most cases, you can still complete the licensing process remotely without having the device returned.
How Remote Licensing Works
SMART allows you to create a dedicated facility for your customer and remotely assign licenses to that facility.
Your customer can then run the SMART Client on the device and complete the license injection process locally, while you retain full visibility of the hardware and licensing status within your SMART account.
Step 1: Create a Customer Facility
Navigate to: https://app.smartdpk.com/facilities and click "Add Facility"
Give it a meaningful name, such as:
- Customer Name
- Customer Site Name
Once created, the facility will have its own unique auth.txt file and settings available at https://app.smartdpk.com/client
Important: Every facility has its own unique authentication file. You must use the auth.txt associated with the facility you created for the customer.
Step 2: Assign Licenses
Allocate the required number of licenses to the new facility.
For example:
- 1 license if a single device was shipped without licensing.
- Multiple licenses if several devices need to be licensed remotely.
Step 3: Send the SMART Client to Your Customer
Provide your customer with:
- SMART.exe
- The
auth.txtfile for the facility you created (Available here: https://app.smartdpk.com/client)
These files can be sent via email, file sharing service, or any other secure method.
Step 4: Ask the Customer to Run SMART
The customer should:
- Boot the device into Windows.
- Enter Audit Mode if required at OOBE. (CTRL + SHIFT + F3)
- Run
SMART.exe. - Follow the on-screen instructions to inject the Windows license.
Once completed, the device will be licensed in the same way as if it had been processed at your refurbishment facility.
Step 5: Monitor Progress
After the license has been injected, all information will be visible within your SMART account under the facility you created.
This includes:
- Hardware information
- Serial number
- Windows license details
- Activation status
- Injection history
This allows you to track and manage remotely licensed devices separately from your main refurbishment facilities.
Benefits of Using a Dedicated Customer Facility
Creating a dedicated facility for remote licensing provides several advantages:
- Keeps customer devices separate from your internal production facilities.
- Makes it easy to track remotely injected licenses.
- Allows multiple devices to be licensed remotely.
- Provides full visibility of hardware and activation status.
- Creates a clear audit trail for compliance purposes.
