Injecting a Licence After a Device Has Left Your Facility

If a device has already left your refurbishment facility and still needs a Windows licence injecting, you may not need the device shipped back to you.

You can create a temporary customer facility in SMART, assign only the required number of keys to that facility, and send the customer the SMART Client files needed to inject the licence remotely.

When to Use This

This process can be used when:

• A device was shipped before a licence was injected.
• A device needs a new licence after it has already left your facility.
• You want the customer to complete the injection without returning the device to you.

Important

• Only assign the number of keys you want the customer to access.
• The customer should only receive the SMART Client and the generated authentication/licence file for their temporary facility.
• Do not send the customer access to your main SMART account.
• The device must be connected to the internet when running the SMART Client.

Step 1: Create a Customer Facility

1. Sign in to https://app.smartdpk.com.
2. Open the Facilities tab.
3. Click Add Facility.
4. Name the new facility after your customer, or use another name that clearly identifies the customer/device.

Step 2: Move Keys to the Customer Facility

1. Return to the Facilities tab.
2. Click Manage Keys next to your original facility.
3. Remove the required number of keys so they become assignable to another facility.
4. Click Manage Keys next to the new customer facility.
5. Assign the correct number of keys to that facility.

For example, if the customer only needs to inject one device, assign one key to the customer facility.

Step 3: Download the SMART Client Files

1. Open the Client tab.
2. Download the SMART Client: SMART.exe.
3. At the bottom of the new customer facility, click Regenerate License.
4. Download the generated licence/authentication file.

This generated file tells the SMART Client which company and facility to authenticate against. It does not contain a list of Windows product keys.

Step 4: Send the Files to the Customer

Send the customer:

• SMART.exe
• The generated licence/authentication file for the new customer facility

The customer will only have access to the keys assigned to that facility.

Step 5: Customer Runs SMART on the Device

Ask the customer to:

1. Start the device in Audit Mode.
2. Make sure the device is connected to the internet.
3. Place SMART.exe and the generated licence/authentication file in the same folder.
4. Run SMART.exe.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to inject the licence.

After Injection

1. Keep the device connected to the internet.
2. Wait up to 4 hours for the licensing process and status updates to complete.
3. Reboot the device.
4. Confirm Windows activation and any relevant SMART status before handing the device back to the end user.

Security Notes

• Do not assign more keys than the customer needs.
• Do not reuse temporary customer facilities for unrelated customers unless you intentionally want them to share the same facility context.
• After the work is complete, review the customer facility and remove any unused keys if required.
